The Evolution Store is my latest obsession. I visited the first time during a recent trip to New York City and was nearly left breathless by the shop aesthetic and selection. Their online store is equally impressive. From little natural wonders like a jewel beetle in a vial for $9 to an exploded Beauchene skull for $15995 this store has a huge selection of beautifully presented treasures.

Paxton Gate is one of my first loves–its location is on the opposite coast in San Francisco. Walking in to this store is like stepping in to a secret garden: from terrarium plants around $5 , to a diorama of caterpillars holding a funeral for $700. Paxton Gate is a lovely mix between DIY and professional craft, natural science and art. They have an amazing section for children as well.

Blood Milk delivers the luxe. The jewelry is inspired by the occult and the macabre, featuring claws, skulls, bones, precious stones and fine metal work. The artist is inspiring, and her work is not only beautiful but imbued with meaning–from a tiny golden thorn for $60 to the involved starling claws clasping a moonstone for $375.

Lark About is the other side of the beauty spectrum: raw, and natural. It’s a fantastic resource for bottles, feathers, pebbles, bones and other bits of nature’s untouched finery. Supremely accessible, as nature should be, Lark About clearly had a keen eye for finding the beauty in the natural world and sharing the bounty. If you’re looking for a source of materials for your own projects, Lark About is an excellent place to start.
