Who ever thought Christmas could be sinister? Meet the Krampus, also called Perchten, Rumpleklaus, and a few others, depending on which Alpine country you find yourself in. His job is to accompany Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas, on his nightly run and help judge whether children have been naughty or nice. If they have been naughty, Krampus steals them away in his sack and beats them with switches!
In the modern day, Krampusnacht–December 5th–is seeing a resurgence in popularity. Young men create impressively gruesome and artistic masks and costumes and troll the streets, terrifying children and adults alike. A perfect outlet, I think, of youthful, creative, macabre, drunk, energy.
